Thrive: The Five Pillars of Fruitful Relationships

DAY 2 OF 7

Committed to the Cause

Friendships, like everything else in life, go through changes. There are times when we feel completely aligned with our friends and times when everything feels off. Friendships will inevitably have difficult seasons and we need a shared desire to push through adversity.  Commitment is the first pillar because it establishes a mutual dedication to the longevity of our relationships. Without it, a friendship simply won’t last.

Many of us have found ourselves in friendships where it feels like we're the only ones working to maintain it. The lack of commitment from the other person can be discouraging and disappointing. As a result, it’s clear that commitment is about more than showing up; it's about how dedicated you are when you arrive.

The Bible tells us, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” (Colossians 3:23). When we work at our friendships as though we are working for the Lord, we are able to persist with godly intention and devotion. This looks like committing to having difficult conversations, being held accountable for our actions, giving and receiving feedback, and pushing through relational discomfort.

Commitment starts with clarity. If you’re feeling tension in any of your friendships, get clear on whether or not both parties are committed not just in words, but also in actions, to the longevity of the friendship.

Pray: Lord, I want to be committed to the people you’ve placed in my life just like you are committed to me. Give me wisdom and courage to go through the hard seasons with godly intention and devotion. I trust that you will guide my words and actions to reflect my submission to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflect: Commitment can vary depending on the time, resources, and energy available in a friendship. How do you show your friends you’re committed to them? How can you maintain this commitment during difficult seasons?
