Where Is Your Treasure?

DAY 3 OF 7

Put God first in your life

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Jesus tells us that if we put God first in our lives, God will provide for our needs. Not our wants, but our needs. How do we seek God first? We seek God in his Word and prayer each day. We obey God even when it’s difficult. We worship God regularly with the community of faith. We give joyfully and generously. We pursue God’s dreams and not our dreams. We consider that our life belongs not to us, but to Another, to the One who died for us.

Seeking God first means I recognize that my life is not about me but about Christ. I live to exalt His name, not my name. I live for His kingdom, not my kingdom. I live for His will, not my will. No matter what happens, I put Jesus Christ first. Here’s an example.

A hundred years ago, William Borden, heir to the Borden dairy fortune, graduated from a Chicago high school. His father gave him three things: money for a trip around the world, a servant to go with him, and a new Bible. Borden traveled through Africa, parts of Asia, and Europe, and saw much suffering and pain. He turned to the back page of his Bible and wrote two words: “No Reserves.”

After graduating from Yale University, he turned down offers from Wall Street and the family business. Jesus Christ had captured his heart and called him to the mission field. He decided to enter Princeton Theological Seminary and wrote two more words: “No Retreats.”

Three years later, he graduated and sailed for China to work with Muslims. While in Egypt, he was stricken with cerebral meningitis and died in 30 days. He was 25 years old. His father, later leafing through his son’s Bible, found a third phrase: “No Regrets.”

This was the perspective of a young man who put Christ first, who went all out for Christ. Penned on the back page of his Bible: No Reserves. No Retreats. No Regrets.

About this Plan

Where Is Your Treasure?

Money is God's rival in the human heart. Our meaning, our sense of value, and our sense of security all depend on the money and things we own, although this should not be so. Security can be found in money and things, or found in God. What is first in your life: money or God? Surely we'll all say that of course God is first, but actually, is He?
