How Should Christians Choose Their Entertainment?

DAY 3 OF 5

Entertainment and Our Time

Time is another important aspect of Christians’ entertainment choices. A famous contemporary theologian, John Piper, once tweeted that “One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove at the Last Day that prayerlessness was not from lack of time.” As believers we have to make sure that we do not neglect spiritual disciplines while we dedicate hours of our time to social media and other forms of entertainment.

Time is a treasure of our earthly life. Once we spent it, we can never get it back. Jesus said that where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also. What we spend our time on shows what we value, what we consider important and prioritize. As Christians, we must use our time properly. The Bible does not present our walk with God as being on the periphery of our lives. Our walk with Jesus Christ is our life. Unfortunately, sometimes the time that we invest in different forms of entertainment exceeds the time we invest into spiritual disciplines.

This was true even for the disciples when Christ was on this earth. Once Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane; instead of praying with Him, His disciples fell asleep. Christ told them that the human spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. In other words, it is easier to spend time watching a movie than reading the Word of God. It takes less effort to hang out on social media or play video games than to pray. Jesus told His disciples to push through and engage in spiritual disciplines because that would keep them from temptation and strengthen their spirit.

As Christ’s disciples, we must prioritize the time we spend in the Word of God. We need to meditate on things that we learn in the Bible. We must spend time praying. We need to engage in spiritual disciplines to understand God’s truth on a deeper level. Keeping what is most important truly most important will guide us in the matters that are questionable in nature. The things that we are entertained by all belong to this world, this realm, this age. Such pleasures are all temporary; they are passing away. The spiritual disciplines, on the other hand, are eternal in nature. This means that the time we spend with God is an eternal investment into our very souls.
