Our Struggle

By Julia Lleverino

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”—Romans 5:3-5 (NIV)

Living hopefully is much more difficult to do during tough times. When we go through trials, we must remember that our hope is found in God! Additionally, we must remember that the result of our life being tested is increased perseverance and a stronger belief in the hope we have. I automatically think of King David as an example. When David was younger, Saul treated him awfully. David had to persevere through years of mistreatment, including many days in the desert. Another person is Jonah, who ran from God because he was scared of God's plan for him to help the people in Nineveh. Jonah went through many trials because of his disobedience, but even in his deserved difficulty, he turned to the Lord. And as a result, God still used him to reach the people of Nineveh. Similarly, here are some ways we can hold onto hope and persevere in difficult seasons.

1. We can draw near to God.

Whenever we go through trials, we often feel like we're alone, or that no one understands what we're going through. However, as you read through the Bible, you will find countless men and women who have gone through similar experiences that lead to stronger character and greater hope. Other examples include Job facing incredible loss, Joseph facing unfair treatment, and the disciples facing horrible persecution. Yet each of them still drew near to God. They prayed to Him and constantly worshipped Him! And of course, we have the ultimate example in Jesus, who we're told in Hebrews 4:15 empathizes with us, with our struggles, our pains, and our weaknesses, because He experienced everything we experience and showed us how to endure and walk in close relationship to God.

2. We can meditate on Scripture.

Whenever we memorize and surround ourselves with Bible verses amid trials, we can recite them to keep the lies of the enemy away from us. Jesus even did this Himself when He was tempted in the desert! If He did it, then we definitely should, too!

3. Encourage one another.

Saying something can make the difference between giving up and persevering. As we encourage one another, we will see our relationships grow in the family of God! We were built for community, and God intended for our community to be strong and deep. This way, we can carry each other's burdens, stand together, and pray together in good times and times of difficulty.

Thank You, Jesus, for giving us hope, not only in Yourself, but in Your promises, Your Word, and each other!

Pause: Take a minute to reflect on how these verses and biblical figures can influence how you persevere in difficulty.

Practice: If you are going through a trial, read about people in the Bible who went through hard times. Look up verses to help you persevere! Don’t be afraid to ask someone you trust for help.

Pray: Dear Lord, thank You for always being there for us, even in our trials. It's so relieving that we can put our trust in You because we know who You are! Thank You for Your support and love during the rough times!

Praise: Listen to "Psalms 46" by Shane and Shane.

Holding on to Hope

In a world filled with uncertainty, suffering, and evil, it is easy to lose sight of hope. However, as Christ-followers, we must remember to hold on to the hope we have in Him! In this four-day expository devotional plan, we pray that you will be reminded of our confidence in Christ, as we take a deeper look at the way Paul describes it in Romans 5.
