DAY 1 OF 5

STUFF

Do you love stuff? It’s not a trick question and there’s no judgment with it; I think it’s incredibly hard to grow up in this society and not be naturally drawn to having a stuff obsession. Ever caught yourself scrolling through Amazon or walking through the mall, not because you actually need anything or want something in particular, but just because you’re kind of feeling bummed and are looking to feel a little better? I’ve definitely given into seeking that quick hit of endorphins that comes from buying something to deal with my own sadness…more times than I care to admit, if I’m honest.

Listen, there’s nothing wrong with having some stuff or buying something you want or need. The problem is when we look to those things for happiness, joy, peace or comfort; they can possibly provide a quick shot of pleasure but they’re not going to fill the hole we’re trying to use them to fill. That’s why Jesus spoke so strongly about this issue in the Sermon on the Mount – He knew that our hearts would be naturally drawn towards stuff and He desperately wanted to lead us away from chasing the empty promises that stuff offers. He just tells us plainly: you can’t have it both ways! You can’t worship Jesus and stuff – you have to pick one.

So, gut check time: what are you really grasping onto? When you’re feeling like you need hope or help or comfort, are you turning to your Savior who freely offers all those things? Or do you turn back to your wallet, your closet full of clothes, or adding one more piece to your collection of stuff? Again, that stuff isn’t bad, but it can’t offer you what only Jesus can. So, if you get really honest with yourself, and God, and realize that some stuff in your life is crowding out God in your heart, maybe it’s time to part ways with it.

Day 2

About this Plan

Grasp

What are you holding onto? What are you relying on for a sense of peace, hope or security? If you’re honest, is it something that you know deep down can’t deliver on those promises? This plan will take a look at how only Jesus can meet these needs for us and what it means to set down these cheap substitutes so we can hold onto Him.
