"Into Your Arms"

My nephew is 2 years old.  And he falls.  A lot.  It’s hilarious to watch.  Because he loves falling.  But when he was just learning to walk it seemed like every time he fell he went crying to his Mom or Dad.  He hated falling, but eventually, he learned to trust their words when they told him that he was okay, that it was a necessary part of learning how to walk.

In high school I took a leadership course that used planning sports and recreational events as a means of developing young leaders.  One of the first things we did that semester was go to a high ropes course and do a whole bunch of team building activities.  We performed all kinds of daring feats while suspended up in the air 50 feet off the ground and we problem solved through all kinds of obstacles together.  We were passing each task with flying colors, but then…the trust fall.  We were asked to stand up on a picnic table (only 3 feet off the ground), cross our arms, close our eyes, and fall backwards into the arms of 6 of our classmates.  And so many of us just couldn’t do it.  It was just too scary.  We knew they were there for us, but we couldn’t trust that our classmates would catch us.

Psalm 91 describes God as a supremely loving being who hides us in the shadow of his wings.  He holds us in his arms.  He is our comforter and he loves us despite our failures.  He offers us love and guidance when we choose to do things our own way.  He gave up everything to tear down the veil that divided us from Him.  But we are a fallen people.  And it’s not easy or comfortable to trust Him.  It’s more natural to rely on ourselves.  It’s easier to find our own way.

We’re trapped in sin, in the fall, and the trick is to learn instead, to fall into His arms, to learn to trust in Him and not in ourselves, to finally let go and trust His love for us.

I still remember the feeling of finally letting go and falling off of that picnic table.  It was unbelievable.  Such a simple act brought about such incredible peace as I surrendered.  And over the years, just like my nephew, I think I’ve learned to love falling.
