Day 2: Depending On You
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)
Sometimes I wish God would give me a map for my future. I wish I could see every twist and turn coming my way, every bump in the road, every full stop. Wouldn’t it be amazing to know what lies ahead?
There’s a reason God doesn’t give us the full map. One, I think it would scare us to death if we knew all the challenges, risks and dreams ahead of us. Two, if we knew everything about our future, we wouldn’t have any reason to depend on a God who holds the future.
So instead, God, in His infinite mercy, chooses to illuminate one step at a time. Boy, those steps can feel really heavy at times, can’t they? Sometimes I take one step forward in what I think is the right direction, only to feel like I’ve taken two steps back.
That’s why it’s important to remember God’s faithfulness in the past. How have you seen God work in your life previously? Where has He shown up? How has He provided?
When God shows up, write it down! Keep a record of God’s faithfulness so that when it feels like He isn’t working—when you feel like He’s silent—you can remind yourself of all the ways He’s already proven Himself faithful.
I wrote a song called “Depending On You” to remind myself of this very fact. I’m reminded to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus every time I sing, “I will keep my mind on what You are able to do… In the darkness I will declare nothing’s too hard for You.”
Maybe you’re standing at a crossroads today. Maybe you’re waiting on a word from the Lord. Maybe you’re praying for a breakthrough. Whatever the situation, remember God’s faithfulness. If He’s been faithful in the past, He’ll be faithful in the future.
We serve a God who is always working behind the scenes. We have to walk by faith, trusting that the same God who made the heavens and earth is working all things together for our good.
Look up. Lift your eyes to God. Seek Him in prayer, and ask Him to reveal your next step. I promise you, He will.
