JEREMIAH 32-33:
In our reading in Jeremiah yesterday, we heard one of God’s most important promises:

Jer. 31:33-34 NLT … this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,” says the LORD.
“I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. … I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

When you think about it, what God has always wanted is rather simple: He would like to be our God, and He would like us to be— and act like— His people.

PROVERBS 3b:
Before we open to our second reading in Proverbs 3, listen to Proverbs 3:5-8 as a reminder, because these verses represent the core of Proverbs.

Prov. 3:5 GNT Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know.
6 Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.
7 Never let yourself think that you are wiser than you are; simply obey the Lord and refuse to do wrong.
8 If you do, it will be like good medicine, healing your wounds and easing your pains.

1CORINTHIANS 11:
In chapter 10 of 1st Corinthians, Paul wrapped up his discussion about food offered to idols. And an important part is to learn from what happened to Israel. Finally he summarized:

1Cor. 10:31 NLT “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
32 Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God.”

Let’s pray.
Our heavenly Father, we thank You again for your magnificent promises! Thank You for telling Jeremiah about the new covenant which You have now given. Thank You for writing your laws within us and writing them on our hearts— something that must have been unimaginable to Jeremiah. You have done that through the Holy Spirit who lives within us. Thank You, Jesus, that You have brought us into that new covenant, and that we have the forgiveness of sins promised to us in Jeremiah 31. Therefore, O Holy Spirit, help us to take heed of the warnings that Paul wrote to us! Help us not to proudly think that we are too strong to fall. Keep us from grumbling— especially about people or leaders in our church. Keep us from testing the limits of your kindness to us by being involved in gossip and other unkind speech. Keep us from marital unfaithfulness and all forms of immorality. Take away our interest in ungodly and unrestrained feasting, drinking, and partying. Please turn our minds away from all craving of evil. Help us to understand how to turn our minds away from obsessive evil thoughts. May we be people with whom You, O God, are pleased, of whom You are proud to say, “I am their God, and they are my people.”
