Forgiving Yourself

Ephesians 1:7

The Greek word translated forgiveness in Ephesians 1:7 literally means to send off, to send away, to release, to let go. The word translated sin in this verse is used when describing a transgression, trespass, a falling by the way, or a person deviating from the way. All people...

  • have transgressed the law of God
  • have deviated from God
  • have fallen from the way of God

Therefore, we all stand guilty of having broken the law of God, and the penalty for breaking God's law is death (Romans 6:23). However, the blood of Jesus Christ brings forgiveness to all. How? Jesus Christ died for all people. He took the penalty of sins and bore the punishment Himself. He was able to do this because He was the Perfect and Ideal Man, and as the Ideal Man, He could stand for and represent all people. When He died, He died as the Representative for all people. Any person who really believes that Jesus died for them is forgiven their sins. God takes their faith and counts it as the death of Jesus Christ. God sees them as being in Jesus Christ, as being in the death of Christ. God counts the death of Jesus for the death of humanity. Therefore, the guilt and penalty for breaking God's laws are completely removed. People's sins and guilt are washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Study Questions:

  • Is this truth - that you can be completely forgiven for all of your sins because of Christ's death - hard for you to believe?
  • Is there something in your life for which you are having a hard time accepting forgiveness? How can you give that to God and accept His forgiveness for yourself?
  • Confess your sins to the Lord. Let the forgiveness that Christ bought for you with His blood fill your soul and take away any guilt you feel.
