The name Jehovah reveals that God is a personal God who enters into relationship with His people.

The name “I AM” (Jehovah) indicates that God is not just an impersonal force at work in creation, but rather is a personal God who enters into relationship with His creation. The name Jehovah is further defined in Exodus 3:15 as

“The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”

In other words, “I AM” is the God who entered into a covenant relationship with Israel’s forefathers and, based on this personal, covenantal relationship, would keep His promises to His people, freeing them from bondage and taking them to the land He had given them.

The people of Israel could bank on the promises that God first made to Abraham: “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abraham, saying, ‘To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates’” (Genesis 15:18). Jehovah’s desire for relationship was even programmed into His plan for Moses to lead the people out of Egypt.

You can see this is evident when God told Moses, “I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the burden of the Egyptians” (Exodus 6:7).
