Who Is the Holy Spirit?

DAY 4 OF 6

The Holy Spirit is Always On and Always Available

Have you ever been jealous of Jesus’ disciples? He sat across from them at the dinner table every night. They went everywhere together. They could ask Him about anything. If something He said wasn’t clear, they could just poke Him on the shoulder and ask what He meant. But, Jesus was limited by His human body. He still had to eat, sleep and go to the bathroom. Sometimes, He would even hide from everyone so He could have some alone time with God.

Those first disciples could literally reach out and touch God. It’s easy to get jealous because Jesus was so real to them. But, when He was preparing to leave earth, Jesus told His followers they would be better off because He was sending them the Holy Spirit. Instead of having to find Jesus to ask a question, the Holy Spirit would live inside them. He would be available at any moment for any reason. Just think about Him, and He’d be there. Need guidance? Feeling confused? Wondering what to do? Just ask and He would hear.

Our relationship with God isn’t limited.  We’ve been promised the same real time access to God through the Holy Spirit. He lives inside of us, and He speaks into our thoughts, our emotions, our dreams, and our passions.

Imagine that God wanted to do something in your school. He might start by having the Holy Spirit whisper parts of His plan to several people. They might not even know each other or attend the same church, but they’re each listening to the Holy Spirit and doing what He says. Piece by piece, He lays out a plan of action to accomplish the thing God wants to do. In His timing, the pieces come together and God’s plan happens.

In fact, the book of Acts is full of crazy stories about how the Holy Spirit put the right people together at the right time to make something special happen. Honestly, with the Holy Spirit living inside each of us, the possibilities are as limitless as God himself. Our only job is to listen to that quiet voice in our head and do our best to obey.

But wait, how do I really know that the voice I’m hearing is from God? Great question. We’ll talk about that tomorrow.
