Job Continues: Death Comes Soon to All
1“Man who is #ch. 15:14; 25:4; Matt. 11:11 born of a woman
is #ch. 10:20; 16:22; Gen. 47:9; Ps. 39:5; 89:47 few of days and #See ch. 5:7full of trouble.
2He comes out like #Ps. 103:15; Isa. 40:6, 7; James 1:10; 1 Pet. 1:24 a flower and #Ps. 37:2; 90:6 withers;
he flees like #See ch. 8:9; 17:7; Ps. 109:23a shadow and continues not.
3And do you #[Ps. 8:4; 144:3] open your eyes on such a one
and #ch. 22:4; Ps. 143:2bring me into judgment with you?
4Who can bring #ch. 15:14; [Ps. 51:5; John 3:6]a clean thing out of an unclean?
There is not one.
5Since his #[ch. 7:1; Ps. 39:4] days are determined,
and #ch. 21:21the number of his months is with you,
and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass,
6 # ch. 7:19 look away from him and leave him alone,#14:6 Probable reading; Hebrew look away from him, that he may cease
that he may enjoy, like #ch. 7:1a hired hand, his day.
7“For there is hope for a tree,
if it be cut down, that it will sprout again,
and that its shoots will not cease.
8Though its root grow old in the earth,
and #Isa. 11:1its stump die in the soil,
9yet at the scent of water it will bud
and put out #[ch. 29:19]branches like a young plant.
10But a man dies and is laid low;
man breathes his last, and #ch. 29:7where is he?
11 #
Isa. 19:5
As waters fail from a lake
and a river wastes away and dries up,
12so a man lies down and rises not again;
till #Deut. 11:21; Ps. 89:29; [Ps. 72:5; Matt. 5:18] the heavens are no more he will not awake
or be #[John 11:11]roused out of his sleep.
13Oh that you would #[Ps. 27:5; 31:20] hide me in #See ch. 21:13 Sheol,
that you would #[Ps. 27:5; 31:20] conceal me #[Isa. 26:20]until your wrath be past,
that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my #ch. 7:1 service I would #ch. 13:15wait,
till my renewal#14:14 Or relief should come.
15You would #ch. 13:22 call, and I would answer you;
you would long for the #See ch. 10:3work of your hands.
16For then you would #ch. 31:4; 34:21 number my steps;
you would not keep #[ch. 10:6]watch over my sin;
17my transgression would be #Deut. 32:34; [Hos. 13:12]sealed up in a bag,
and you would cover over my iniquity.
18“But the mountain falls and #Isa. 34:4 crumbles away,
and #ch. 18:4the rock is removed from its place;
19the waters wear away the stones;
the torrents wash away the soil of the earth;
so you destroy the hope of man.
20You prevail forever against him, and he passes;
you change his countenance, and send him away.
21His sons come to honor, and he #[Eccles. 9:5]does not know it;
they are brought low, and he perceives it not.
22He feels only the pain of his own body,
and he mourns only for himself.”
