Die engel sê toe vir haar: “Moenie bang wees nie, Maria, want God bewys genade aan jou. Jy sal swanger word en 'n seun in die wêreld bring, en jy moet Hom die naam Jesus gee. Hy sal groot wees en die Seun van die Allerhoogste genoem word. Die Here God sal Hom die troon van sy voorvader Dawid gee, en Hy sal as koning oor die nageslag van Jakob heers tot in ewigheid. Aan sy koningskap sal daar geen einde wees nie.” Maar Maria sê vir die engel: “Hoe is so iets moontlik, aangesien ek nog nooit omgang met 'n man gehad het nie?” Die engel antwoord haar: “Die Heilige Gees sal oor jou kom, en die krag van die Allerhoogste sal die lewe in jou wek. Daarom sal die een wat gebore word, heilig genoem word, die Seun van God. Kyk, 'n bloedverwant van jou, Elisabet, het in haar ouderdom self ook 'n seun ontvang, en sy wat as onvrugbaar bekend was, is nou al in haar sesde maand. Niks is vir God onmoontlik nie.” Maria sê toe: “Ek is tot beskikking van die Here. Laat met my gebeur wat u gesê het.” Toe het die engel van haar af weggegaan.

Every good story has a plot twist—an unexpected moment that changes everything. One of the biggest plot twists in the Bible is the Christmas story. Over the next five days, we’ll explore how this one event changed the world and how it can change your life today.
Our Christmas story starts with the angel’s annunciation to Mary and concludes with the visit of the Magi. In these reflections and applications of the Christmas narrative I will mostly refer to Luke, as his is the fullest of the gospel accounts.
Slow down and savor time with the Savior this season. Choose to pause and ponder as Mary did, to get lost in the wonder of Immanuel, of God with us. This year, let it be simply Christmas.
We’re filled with anticipation as we lean into this season of celebration with the intention of tuning into the heart of God.
