Op ’n dag het die Here vir Abram gesê: “Jy moet weggaan, weg van die plek waar jy gebore is, weg van jou pa se huis af. Ek sal jou ’n ander land gee waar jy kan gaan bly. Ek sal jou en jou nageslag ’n groot nasie maak. Ek sal jou ryk en voorspoedig maak. Oral sal mense jou naam ken en van jou praat. Oor jou sal dit met hulle ook goed gaan. “Wie vir jou goed is, sal Ek gelukkig maak. Wie jou sleg behandel, sal teëspoed ervaar. Oor jou sal dit met alle mense op aarde goed gaan.” Abram het toe alles gelos en weggegaan, net soos die Here vir hom gesê het. Sy broerskind, Lot, het saam met hom gegaan. Abram was 75 jaar oud toe hy uit Haran weggetrek het. Abram het sy vrou, Sarai, sy broerskind, Lot, en al die besittings wat hulle oor die jare opgegaar het, saamgevat. Al die mense wat vir Abram-hulle in Haran gewerk het, het ook saamgetrek. Hulle het in die rigting van Kanaän begin trek en na ’n lang tyd daar aangekom. Abram het deur die land getrek en by Sigem gekom. Hy het digby die groot boom van More kamp opgeslaan. In daardie stadium het die Kanaäniete in die land gebly. Die Here het aan Abram verskyn en vir hom gesê: “Abram, hierdie land sal Ek nog vir jou en jou nageslag gee.” Abram was bly en het vir die Here wat aan hom verskyn het ’n altaar gebou. Van daar af is hy bergwêreld toe en het net oos van Bet-El kamp opgeslaan. Waar sy tent gestaan het, was Bet-El aan sy westekant en Ai aan die oostekant. Hy het weer ’n altaar vir die Here gebou en daar gebid.
