Hulle het toe weer hardop gehuil. Orpa het haar skoonmoeder gesoen, maar Rut het aan haar vasgeklou. Naomi sê vir haar: “Kyk, jou skoonsuster het omgedraai na haar volk en na haar gode toe. Gaan terug, agter jou skoonsuster aan.” Maar Rut het geantwoord: “Moet my nie probeer dwing om u te verlaat nie of om van u af weg te gaan nie, want waar u gaan, sal ek gaan, en waar u bly, sal ek bly. U volk is my volk, u God is my God. Waar u sterf, sal ek sterf, en daar sal ek begrawe word. “Die HERE kan my maar swaar straf as ek nie woord hou nie: Net die dood sal ons skei.” Toe Naomi sien dat sy vasbeslote is om saam met haar te gaan, het sy opgehou om haar te probeer ompraat.
