Matthew 13-20: Kingdoms in Conflict

DAY 9 OF 40

The Astonishing Power of Faith

By Romina Chevren

"When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. 'Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?' they asked. 'Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?' And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.' And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith."—Matthew 13:53–58 (NIV)

Before delving into this Scripture, I’d like to highlight two pivotal words that help us understand what’s happening here and how it can still happen to us today:

1. Astonished:

·Meaning: "Astonished" denotes a state of overwhelming amazement in response to something extraordinary or unexpected. It’s a powerful emotional reaction.

·Application: The people of Nazareth were astonished by Jesus' wisdom and miraculous powers. They couldn't comprehend how someone they had known from childhood could possess such divine abilities. This astonishment highlights the undeniable extraordinary nature of Jesus' ministry and teachings.

2. Embracing:

·Meaning: "Embracing" involves welcoming something or someone with an open heart and mind. It signifies a willingness to incorporate new ideas, experiences, or individuals into one's life.

·Application: The people of Nazareth struggled to embrace Jesus as more than Joseph’s son. Their familiarity with His past prevented them from accepting His divine calling. Their hesitation to embrace His ministry limited their ability to receive His teachings and miraculous power.

The relationship between these words in this passage is crucial. Here, the people of Nazareth missed an opportunity for transformation and spiritual growth because they failed to embrace Jesus as the Messiah despite being astonished by His wisdom and power. They allowed preconceived notions and familiarity to stand in the way of a deeper relationship with God.

Their astonishment should have led to embracing Jesus as Messiah. However, their astonishment gave way to doubt and skepticism, hindering them from embracing Him fully. Their familiarity with His humanity obstructed their recognition of His divinity.

Jesus had been teaching, performing miracles, and sharing parables in various places. Yet when He returned to Nazareth—His hometown, He faced skepticism and unbelief from those who had known Him since childhood. The people of Nazareth were astonished by His wisdom and the miraculous powers He displayed. However, instead of embracing this revelation, they allowed familiarity and prejudice to cloud their judgment.

Their response is a sobering reminder that even in our own lives, those who have known us for years may struggle to accept our spiritual growth and transformation. They may doubt the power of God working within us because they remember who we were. This shouldn't discourage us; it should inspire us to be steadfast in our faith and continue to demonstrate the power of God in our lives.

Jesus acknowledged the challenge of being recognized in one's home. He emphasized the importance of faith, reminding us that faith is the key to experiencing the miraculous in our lives.

What do you do when you encounter the extraordinary in your faith journey, whether through God's Word, a spiritual experience, or the work of God in someone's life? Does your familiar hinder your ability to be blessed by these things? Or do you embrace these moments with an open heart and mind, allowing God to work in and through you, leading to a deeper understanding and relationship with Him?

I hope you see the essential spiritual lesson this passage highlights: astonishment alone isn’t enough. Emotional moments and experiences can’t sustain a lifelong relationship. Instead, as we walk daily in relationship with Jesus, we must strive to fully embrace Jesus as Lord in every area of our lives. In order to see the miraculous and experience the power of God at work in us, must walk in faith. So, I pray today we’d continue to grow in faith, trusting in the power of God to work through us, regardless of where we come from or who we used to be.

Pause: Take a moment to reflect on your own life and the people who may doubt your spiritual growth and transformation due to their familiarity with your past. Consider any situations where you may have faced skepticism or lack of support from those close to you.

Practice: In your daily life, practice patience and understanding towards those who may struggle to recognize your spiritual journey. Recognize their doubts are often rooted in their own perceptions and experiences. Instead of becoming discouraged, strive to consistently live out your faith and values, demonstrating the love and grace of Christ in your actions and words.

Pray: Heavenly Father, I come before You with gratitude for the faith journey You’ve set me on. Help me to pause and reflect on the challenges I may face from those who’ve known me for a long time. Grant me the wisdom and strength to practice patience and love when confronted with skepticism or lack of support from others. May my life be a living testimony of Your grace and power, and may those who doubt come to see the transformative work You are doing in me. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
