DAY 3 OF 25

It’s important to remember that spiritual habits themselves aren’t the goal. We could memorize all the Scripture in the Old and New Testament, and recite every chapter and verse from memory without a second thought — but without Jesus, that knowledge means nothing. We can spend hours every day in prayer for both ourselves and the people in our lives, but if we don’t take the time to listen and quiet ourselves to hear a reply, we will be missing out on the real point of connection. There is nothing that we can do on our own that can take the place of a relationship with Jesus. Jesus Himself told us: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3).

Make sure that the spiritual habits you practice are aimed at the same goal: growing deeper in your relationship with Jesus. Jesus said that knowing Him is somehow “eternal life.” Getting to know Him is what faith is. It’s what Christianity is all about. If you start to get sidetracked from the end goal of getting to know Jesus or making Christian to-do lists you feel like you should follow, ask Him to pull you back to the right focus. He’s your friend, He wants you to know Him, so that’s a prayer He loves to hear and answer.
