Jonathan and David, a Very Special FriendshipSample

Jonathan and David, a Very Special Friendship

DAY 16 OF 16

David kept his promises to Jonathan’s descendants

“And David said, ‘Mephibosheth! … Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.’” (2 Samuel 9:6-7)

After Saul's death, David became king over part of the land. Another part was ruled by Saul's son Is-Bosheth. The situation is summarized as follows, “There was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. And David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul became weaker and weaker” (2 Samuel 3:1). When David was finally king over the whole land, it seemed logical that he would kill all of Saul's remaining relatives. That's what kings usually did, to eliminate all possible competition. But David had not forgotten what he had promised Saul and especially Jonathan. He ordered a search to find out if there was anyone left of their family, “that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake” (2 Samuel 9:1).

Indeed, there was a son of Jonathan who was five years old when his father died. Meanwhile, this man had grown up. David had him come to Jerusalem and returned his family property.

So, the friendship between Jonathan and David lasted through difficult times and even after Jonathan's death. David remained loyal to his friend.
