The Secret to a Life of Greatness

Years ago, I remember taking my younger sister to basketball practice. The coach was berating and belittling everyone. So I went up to him after practice and kindly appealed, “I don’t want to cause a scene, but instead of talking down to your team, why not speak to their potential and what they can become?”

You see, there’s something within all of us that longs for significance, meaning, and purpose in life. At the very core of our being are seeds of greatness placed within us by God. These seeds—when identified and watered—grow into something more wonderful than we could ever dream possible. Friend, God designed you to be a Difference Maker.

Greatness from God’s perspective is defined by how we help and add value to people. One of the greatest examples of this in Scripture is John the Baptist. In fact, God refers to John the Baptist as great in the sight of the Lord because of how he helped people. Jesus goes on to say in Matthew 11:11,“Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

Wow. That last line—whoever is least… is greater than he. Jesus makes it abundantly clear here—we may not be known, we may not be famous, we may not have all the answers, but we can be great from God’s perspective as we serve others!

As you engage with God’s Word, ask yourself the following questions:

● What is God saying to me?

● What does it mean to me?

● How can I apply what God is teaching me?

● How can I be specific in prayer today?

After you reflect on these questions, bring everything to God in prayer.
