DAY 2 OF 7

Chapter 1: "You’re Underqualified"

This chapter has been shortened for the Bible app

1 Timothy 4:12 says, Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.”

Countless people at the beginning of their careers have felt underqualified. That insecurity only grows when you hear whispers of people doubting you because of your age or lack of experience. Unfortunately, sometimes they do not see the value of a new and passionate leader who has never been more ready. In the chapter verse, Paul writes to Timothy, a faithful leader, reminding him not to be discouraged by the naysayers. Although he is young, he can be an example for the other generations around him. If you feel discouraged because of your age, know you can be the godly example that those around you may deeply need.

Many believe Timothy was more on the timid side. That personality trait could have made him slow to speak out against false teachings and sin in the church. Paul wanted to encourage him to speak with authority despite his age. There is a vast difference between seniority and authority. Seniority is given when you are older or have been at a company for several years. Authority can be given at any age because it can be provided by the Holy Spirit. Timothy is given instructions to be an example in both his outer life (speech and conduct) and in his inner self with love, faith, and purity. Be an example for those around you, especially with the things they cannot see because your heart will spill over into the things they can see. Timothy may have had some insecurities because of his age or lack of experience, but Paul reminded him that if God has called you to something, do not let others look down on you, and be an example of godly love.

As a young person, I feel the compulsive need to prove myself to everyone. It also does not help if you look young. I would get offended when people questioned my leadership ability because of my baby face. In the beginning, I would work long days, have little rest, and jump at any opportunity that came my way. I was torn between being eager to finally be doing God’s call for my life and needing to confirm that I was capable of it. It took me a while to see that insecurity pushed an unhealthy work ethic. There is nothing inherently wrong with being a hard worker, but when we work hard for the applause of others and not God’s validation, we can burn out quickly. If we find ourselves tired and short-tempered, then who or what are we really serving?

The enemy creates a thought deep within us that we need to prove we are the best at what we do. In reality, we may not be the best at what we do, which is okay. Whether we are twenty-five, thirty-seven, or even eighty-four, we are not supposed to be perfected yet. In fact, if there ever comes a time you believe you no longer need to learn, know that it is through a teachable spirit that maturity occurs.

The only one you have to prove anything to is God, and luckily, he already knows your heart. Do not worry about the comments of others; let them make the comments. With or without their unneeded approval, you can continue to lead underqualified with the strength that comes from God.
