Courageous Change: How to Boldly Pivot When Pain or Plateaus Are Keeping You Stuck

DAY 2 OF 7

Day 2: When Pain Keeps You Stuck

Our lives are constantly in motion. From the highs of starting a new career, getting married, or celebrating the birth of a baby to the lows of experiencing a job loss, divorce, or the death of a loved one, change is inevitable. These disruptions can cause us to take a temporary pause from our plans, or if drastic enough, force a major upheaval, requiring us to reset and start over.

When we experience ongoing pain and hardship, we can get stuck. As the days pass and our prayers go unanswered, it’s exhausting. We begin to lose hope of ever seeing our dreams fulfilled. It is important to remember the Lord knows the trials we are facing and his plan for our lives remains the same, even when we experience hardships, detours, or setbacks.

Did you know the Lord intends to use you for his purpose, even in the midst of your suffering? That’s right. God does not expect you to wait for everything to be perfect, or at least somewhat settled, before he can use you to do his good work. Take a look at this promising verse in the Bible.

“Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good” (1Peter 4:19 ESV).

In the weeks just prior to my mother’s death, I observed her living out her purpose. Even in her pain, she was kind to her caregivers. She was concerned about her children. And she wanted to know she had pleased the Lord. She didn’t realize it, but God was using her suffering for his glory.

When the Lord has a plan for our lives, nothing, not even pain can stop it. We read in the book of Psalms these encouraging words, “The Lord will fulfill his purpose in me.” This trial you are experiencing is not meant to paralyze you or crush your dreams. Instead, God will use it for your good and to strengthen your faith for the journey ahead.

When the painful moments start turning into painful months, even years, we tend to endure them through gritted teeth. “If only this would pass, then I would be able to serve the Lord.” Do not wait for things to get better to ask Jesus how he can use you. Instead, ask him for an opportunity to be of service where you are right now.

While you wait, remember, God has a purpose in your pain. Not one moment of suffering is ever wasted. He promises to use what you are going through for your good, because he has called you according to his purpose.

“Your pain has a purpose. Your problems, struggles, heartaches, and hassles cooperate toward one end-the glory of God.” ~Max Lucado

Consider the following suggestions as you prepare your heart to respond God's calling for your life.

  • Pray for the Lord to strengthen, deliver you, and help you move forward in the purpose he has for you.
  • Ask God to teach you to see your trial through his eyes and a heart to trust his plans are for your good.
  • Look for windows of opportunity for God to use you while you wait to get through this painful season in your life.
  • Remember the Lord loves you and will use this trial you are going through for your good.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus. I come to you in pain, stuck, and afraid to move forward. Please reveal to me any past or present hurts that are holding me back from stepping into your plan and purpose for my life. Help me trust in you and be patient during this season of waiting. I ask you to use my story to bring you glory. Amen.
