When Disaster Strikes at Home

DAY 2 OF 5

In Acts, we read about a severe famine that spread throughout the Mediterranean region, particularly affecting Judea. The church in Antioch decided to send assistance to the Judean church by collecting money and distributing it to those in need. They contributed their skills, time, and resources, using the existing network of churches to send their donations through Paul and Barnabas.

Awareness and compassion led to action.

One of the strengths of a church is its ability to rally volunteers. This is an important aspect of any disaster response. Volunteers are most effective if they are well supported and encouraged by church leaders.

Tearfund created a resource called Umoja (the Swahili word for togetherness) which helps the local church work with its community and seeks to strengthen the church’s vision through a range of practical steps. Umoja is available from Tearfund. You can access this free resource here.
