Pneuma Life: Holy Spirit in You

DAY 2 OF 7

Life Breath...

The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
John 3:8

We find the Holy Spirit on the opening pages of God’s Word as the creation story unfolds. Usually referred to as the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is not a second-class citizen regarding God the Father and God the Son.

Considering that the Bible’s original language words, Pneuma and Ruah, both mean breath, air, wind, or spirit, we are reminded that breath and the ability to breathe are the sustenance of all life.

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Genesis 2:7

What a stunning account of the Spirit of God being the very breath that brought man, formed from dust, into a living being. God was sharing His same life breath with His beloved creation. And, if breath is life itself, how much more is the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, a treasure beyond compare?

However, a problem arose in humanity.

When Adam and Eve chose to turn from God in the garden of Eden, death came upon them just as God had warned them (Gen. 2:17). Not only did their physical bodies begin the aging and death process, but their spirit died instantly, resulting in their separation from God. That sweet place of relationship with Him experienced death eternally, and these consequences for their sin were passed onto us (Rom. 5:12-16).

Now, we understand why Jesus said we must be born again of the Spirit. We may have been born physically, but our spirit needs to be born again with the life breath of the Holy Spirit. And this is what precisely happens when an individual receives the Lord into their life by faith (John 1:12). The very breath of God breathes life into their spirit, reinstating eternal life with Him. Literally, spiritual CPR!

This act of the Holy Spirit is reminiscent of His breath pouring into Adam at the time of creation, restoring us to the high honor of being called a child of God, and filling us with the same Spirit that raised Lord Jesus from the dead.
