The Ageless One in Time's Embrace

DAY 4 OF 7

Why did God the Son become man?

“Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” (Hebrews 2:14-15, NIV)

God becoming human seems very illogical. Why would God the Son leave His eternal glory to dwell on the earth? And even more, “being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:8). Why would He do that?

The Bible offers many answers. Hebrews 2 says that Jesus died to break the power of the devil and of death. For ever since the first humans sinned, humanity is subjected to death and the power of the devil. Some verses later, we read that Jesus made atonement for the sins of the people (Hebrews 2:17). By doing so, He broke the power of sin over their lives and restored their relationship with God. Galatians 4:5 uses different words for the same thing, saying that Jesus redeemed people and adopted them as sons of God. John 3:16 says He gives us eternal life — because He loves us so much.

In summary, God the Son became man to free man from sin and death, and the devil and to restore his relationship with God the Father.

If you were in God’s position, would you be ready to humble yourself so much and go through suffering and death to save humans who are in trouble because of their own disobedience?
