(Not) Seeing and Believing

DAY 10 OF 10

Asking God to open your eyes

Psalm 119 is the longest song in the Bible, and it is about the preciousness of God’s law or instruction. David sings, “The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces” (Psalm 119:72). At first glance, this seems a little odd. If I were to write such a long song, the law would not be my favorite subject. The word “law” even has a negative connotation since it implies that I have to obey instead of just doing whatever I like to do.

In the Bible, the word “law” means more than just a set of instructions. It includes stories about God’s dealings with man that teach us Who God is. Both these stories and the commandments that the Lord has given, are a rich source of wisdom and insight — if only our eyes are opened to see it! That’s what David is asking for (see Psalm 119:18). He meditates on God’s Word day and night and discovers so many riches that he did not notice before, as the Holy Spirit gives him deeper insight.

Before you start reading your Bible, first ask God to open your eyes!
