Fear Not! Protection Devotions

DAY 6 OF 7

Fear Is a Choice

“But You are a shield around me, O Lord; You bestow glory on me and lift up my head. To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side” (Psalm 3:3-6).

This was a Psalm of David as he fled from his son Absalom. David chose not to accept fear. Certainly he had good reason to fear. “A messenger came and told David, ‘The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom’" (2 Samuel 15:13). Many of the men David had trusted now wanted to kill him and his family.

They say you can choose to love or not to love; it is a choice. The same can be said with fear; you can choose to live in fear or not to fear. David chose the latter and you can too. Whatever life is throwing at you today, you can choose to fear it or not.

The question each of us has to deal with is, Will God do the same thing for me as He did for David? Peter said, "Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons” (Acts 10:34). And Paul said, “For God does not show favoritism” (Romans 2:11). The same thing God did for David He will do for you. He will surround you like a shield. He will sustain and protect you.

The real key to living fearlessly is to know God, and the primary way to get to know God is through His word. “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions” (Psalm 107:20). God sent His word to deliver us from destruction.

“My son, give attention to My words; incline your ear to My sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh” (Proverbs 4:20-22). These are not idle words because God does not use idle words.

God is just waiting for you to call out to Him. Tell Him the burdens that are too heavy for you to bear. Jesus said, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Why not take Jesus up on His word today!

Prayer: Lord, I choose faith over fear because I choose to believe You and Your word. Your word is living and active and will not return to You void. What You did for David You will do for me. Cover me Father with Your shield. In Jesus' name, amen.
