Wondered by the Word — The Bible in a Year

Ready to Testify

Key Verse: Revelation 22:18-21

“I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.”

Reading through Revelation can be tough. Horses and scrolls and churches. There’s life and death and heaven and hell. What do you think the first recipients of John’s writing were thinking? That he had lost his mind? Maybe.

The last four verses of the bible include a warning, a promise, two requests for the Lord to be near, and two amens.

Warning: Don’t add. Don’t subtract. If you commit these sins, you’ll either get a plague, which translates to a wound or strike, or you’ll have your inheritance taken away.

Promise: Jesus said he’s coming soon. Obviously, we don’t have the same concept of time as God. Soon for us isn’t soon for Him. Either way, He tells us he will be back.

Requests: Come Lord and the asking for grace.

Amen: Amen is the word used, so let it be.

We see that we’re not supposed to add nor subtract from God’s Word. For most of us, that seems easily done. But this isn’t just a command for those who’ve put Bibles together, translated them, and taught them; this command is for those who read them too. When we’re reading and studying, we shouldn’t be skipping over parts and/or avoiding them just because we don’t like it. We’re not supposed to ignore any of the Bible, specifically those parts that are meant to transform and sanctify us.

After all that we’ve read and studied, are you ready to testify? Are you ready to witness that your hope is in a risen Lord? The Bible gives us the full story of God. It’s who He is. Even though we won’t fully see and understand Him, we can continuously study to deepen our understanding and our relationship with Him.
