Caves - Caves

DAY 1 OF 7

Obsession

This song is jam packed with passionate lyrics, from front to back. And the best part, it was written well over 20 years ago! Martin Smith, who was the singer of the band deliriou5? wrote it, and put it on one of their first records. I had the opportunity to meet Martin and learned he’s one of the most down to earth people I’ve ever gotten to spend time with, and this song comes from a place of honesty.

When I was listening to it again, the words just pierced my soul in a way I couldn’t explain. I was thinking about what Biblical picture stood out for this song, and I’m again reminded of David when he made a big mistake in sin with Bathsheba. He writes this honest, earnest Psalm full of asking for mercy, grace, and returning to God in his time of brokenness. I love it, because despite all of David’s sin, we still know David as a man after God’s own heart, and I wonder if Psalms like this provide an insight into David’s heart.

Despite how far David had fallen, he offered genuine repentance and turned his face towards God in moments of weakness. David looked to God as being the source of his salvation, not his actions. Even in our piles of sinful actions, our place in Christ is not determined by what we do, but rather in whom we follow (JESUS!). God is not looking for perfect people, but he’s looking for a repentant generation, whose hearts BURN for Him! That’s what pleases God. Know that today, even right now, your sins can be forgiven because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. Let your heart burn for more of Christ, even when walking through the muddy waters of sin and failure.
