Belonging to God and Each Other

DAY 3 OF 3

Belonging to One Another

Read Hebrews 13:1 - 13:6

Think. In some ways, Hebrews 13:1-6 represents one of the greatest themes of the Bible. Loving one another—including hospitality for strangers—is woven throughout the Old Testament law and the teachings of Jesus.

Recognizing and responding in solidarity with those who are suffering publicly and unjustly are seen as part of every believer’s responsibilities. Experiencing neglect is too common and neglecting others too easy. We belong to one another in Christ, and this relationship is marked by compassion and empathy for each other.

Keeping things like sex and money in perspective is important and signals our membership in the Christian community each day. Not allowing oneself to worship money as an idol or covet sex to the point of stealing it from another keeps the focus on God and God’s provision. Affirmations from the Psalms support what the author is teaching here.

In Hebrews 13:6, the writer refers back to Hebrews 10:32–36 and the context of the hearers’ larger Christian experience. Reminding the hearers of their personal and communal struggles and persecution early in their lives of faith makes this final Psalmic affirmation all the more meaningful: “With the Lord on my side I do not fear. What can mortals do to me?" (Psalm 118:6)

  • Reflecting on your life with God, how has God been there for you?
  • Who has God used to demonstrate His presence when you needed it most?
  • Since we belong to one another, how will you relate to those with whom you share this journey?

Pray. Loving God who exists communally as Three-in-One, thank You for including me in your love. Help me love others as an extension of Your love and belonging. Amen.

Act. Find a way today to “let mutual love continue” (Hebrews 13:1). Allow yourself to feel what another sister or brother is feeling. Offer him or her care as you would want to be cared for.
