There's Hope For Today

DAY 9 OF 366

My head was swimming in business as I pulled into rush hour traffic. Talk radio poured out a steady stream of bad news. My mind was on other things. I worried about things I could not control and people I could not change. I determined, I resolved, I retrenched as I listed all my illegitimate cares and their cures. Almost lost in the background was the voice of my six-year-old passenger. “Hey Dad ... Daddy, hey Dad!” – she was excited. She was giving me a complete rundown of her day and I responded with the occasional, “Oh really,” but I wasn’t listening. It didn’t hit me until we arrived at home – she was still talking. She had chattered non-stop for fifteen minutes about her little world. She asked questions, hummed melodies, discussed her friends, and I couldn’t recall a single word. I couldn’t help but think that the day will come when she might not want my attention so much anymore. I repented before God and asked my little girl to tell it all again. She didn’t hesitate for a moment, and I listened with rapt attention. God speaks to us constantly by His creation and by His Word. It is our great loss when distractions rob us of golden moments with the One who loves us most.
