DAY 4 OF 5

COMFORT

What is your most comfortable situation? Does it involve a perfect spot on the couch? Maybe an old pair of super-broken-in sweatpants? Maybe it’s floating on an unnecessarily huge swan in the pool? Think for a moment about that feeling when everything is right with the world and you could not be more comfortable.

In general, we're a society that loves comfort; honestly, we kind of worship it sometimes. Any time we suddenly face a decidedly uncomfortable situation, we try everything we can to avoid it, or get out of it, or just get back to comfortable. It’s one of the more subtle things we grasp onto but comfort is probably one of the most common things we seek instead of Jesus.

Once again, Jesus knows that about us (are you sensing a theme here?) and so He spoke very directly about it. He was surrounded by a crowd of people — one of His disciples had just let the cat out of the bag that He was the Messiah — and Jesus knew that people were going to rally behind Him and try to jump on His bandwagon because they had a very different idea about what the Messiah would do. They thought this was their ticket to the sweet life…they thought Jesus was about to make everything so very comfortable for them. And so He said to them (and us) what you’re about to read.

Jesus calls us out of comfort. He calls us to set aside our own way and what we think would make us happy, and to go all-in with whatever He wants in our lives. But here’s the truth: following Jesus is often uncomfortable. Yes, it’s a life filled with hope, and joy, and adventure, and meaning…but it’s rarely comfortable. The real question is: are you willing to give up your comfort so you can hang onto Jesus instead?
