Our Daily Bread Christmas Edition: For God So Loved

DAY 2 OF 10

So We Can Understand In our world, important people tend to associate with other important people; they seek each other out. And being seen with the right people in the right places can take you far. So it is with no little confusion that we view God humbling himself so drastically before us. Yes, us. You and me. We were the reason He left His glory. We’ll never really understand it in our human lifetime, not completely anyway. We know what He did, but for the life of us we can’t figure out why. When someone greater than us humbles himself before us in some way, it is a powerful gesture. We are amazed and moved that a person of such stature and status would do such a thing. When someone gives us a gift we don’t expect or deserve, we say, “Oh, you shouldn’t have.” But we are touched by the thought. So when I think about my God in a manger, I shake my head in utter disbelief. But I am so grateful that He did. God humbled himself in a way that even a common shepherd could understand. While lying in a manger, God was making an announcement to all who would come to Him. It was a silent message, and it tells us what we desperately need to know about our God. —Dan Schaeffer How Christ became a human being may be a mystery, but God’s love isn’t.
