How to Make a Deeper Connection With God

DAY 2 OF 6

BE STILL

Everything in our world today is moving faster and faster. Computers and smart phones have revolutionized the way we create, store and retrieve information on a whim. A global economy and instant communication have created an explosion of data that we are exposed to every day. The average adult consumes five times more information every day than the average adult did 50 years ago.

Our brains are working overtime to process and filter all the data, trying to determine what is and isn’t important to our survival. There’s more data available than we can ever possibly process. Scientists are saying that the overwhelming amount of information invading our thoughts day after day is affecting our minds and can lead to agitation, confusion, and decision paralysis.

We’re getting so much information that it’s hard to quiet our minds down enough to focus on one thing at a time.

That can sound depressing, but I truly believe that God knew exactly what you and I would be dealing with in the 21st century. He put us on earth for such a time as this, and He’s not surprised or worried by the technology we live with. I believe He has absolutely given us the wisdom and the grace to deal with it and use it to our best advantage.

But it’s up to us to tap into that wisdom on a daily basis! I believe spending time alone with God every day it’s the most crucial thing that you and I must discipline ourselves to do. And it’s the only way to develop a deeper relationship with Him.

Psalm 46:10, although written centuries ago, is completely applicable for today and gives us a huge key in how to overcome the mind-numbing flow of worldly information and be intimately and securely anchored in our relationship with our Father. It says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

That is a loaded admonition, isn’t it? In today’s fast-paced, highly driven, stressed-out world, we are not very good at being still. Yet this verse shows us that if we will be still, we can know God. And when you know God, you have every advantage. I would venture to say, with all that’s going on around us every day, we need to be still. When we’re still, we are simply in a better position to hear from God.
