Overcoming Guilt

DAY 6 OF 7

Introduction

Guilt is burdensome. And the burden seems to get heavier the longer we carry it. Guilt makes room for other negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, and shame. Who wouldn’t want to be rid of guilt and its baggage? Many people seek to get rid of guilt by burying themselves in work, doing an overabundance of kind deeds, or by escaping reality through some means. None of these can ease a guilty conscience. Only by accepting the atoning sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf can we receive forgiveness of sin and a clear conscience.

Pray

God, I am ready to be free of guilt. Help me to trust your love that led Jesus to give his life so I can be free.

Read

The writer of Hebrews tells us the only way that our sins can be forgiven.

Hebrews 9:22; John 1:29

Reflect

What does the writer of Hebrews say is the only way our sins can be forgiven? According to the Levitical laws given to God’s people, only by an offering of the blood of animals could sins be forgiven. But Jesus came and gave his life for us and his sacrifice put an end to the need for animal sacrifice, which could not completely solve the problem. (To learn more about this read Hebrews, chapter 9). Jesus, the Lamb of God, did it for me, for you, and for the whole world.

Respond

Will you unload your burden of guilt by turning to Jesus? Let God’s Word lead you to the place of accepting the freedom that Christ brings—freedom from the weight of sin and guilt. Ask God to purify you and enable you to have a clear conscience toward God and people.
