[Difference Makers] Diverse Dining

DAY 7 OF 7

Difference Makers Reach Out Wherever They Are

Reporting for On the Road, a segment on the CBS Evening News, Steve Hartman shared the story of a difference maker here in the United States. Jaden Hayes lost his father when he was four; his mother died in her sleep two years later. Jaden was heartbroken. But the orphan decided he wanted to make sad people smile. He asked his guardian to buy toys so he could give them away to others, to cheer them up.

What would you do if a child gave you a rubber ducky or a dinosaur? Probably what people in downtown Savannah, Georgia did: smile. And maybe give Jaden a hug.

This orphan decided that he wanted to be the one who makes a difference in someone’s life. Instead of focusing on his misery, he chose to make it his ministry. That little six-year-old boy just decided, “I'm going to make a difference,” and he stepped out and did it.

As Christians, we aim for smiles of the soul, not just smiles of the face. That is what is so great about being a believer in Christ: it's not just that we get to make a difference, in putting a smile on somebody’s face. (Hopefully we do, we want to be winsome as believers in Christ.) We get to put a smile on God’s face and on others’ faces—and hearts and souls—by reaching out to them.

A church member who is in the oil business shared with me about missionaries in the Middle East. She wrote, “They leave their home countries and their families behind because they are dedicated to sharing the love of Jesus in closed countries and in some of the world’s most remote areas. The difference makers I’ve met are insightful, hard-working, humble, and incredibly courageous people with a passion for the lost. I’ve watched them persevere under tremendous pressures as they live like Christ in the toughest of circumstances.”

Difference makers reach out. They are about their personal Savior, not about their personal successes. They want others to know the difference Jesus can make in a person’s life.

Pray: Jesus, help me to be a difference maker in Your Name.
