Worthless Christianity

DAY 3 OF 4

There is a tragic reality in our world that’s as old as time. It’s the problem of showing partiality, favoritism, and prejudice. Our goal in this study is to highlight the importance of gospel vision in the way that we see and treat others.

In brief, James begins his second chapter with the truth that showing partiality is anti-gospel.

A quick overview of what favoritism is NOT. Favoritism is not the same as giving honor to whom honor is due. Favoritism is not the same as having healthy, godly friendships at church with whom we are closer with some than others.

The original word used in James 2:1 for partiality or favoritism is a combination of two words which mean “face receiving.” It communicates the idea that showing partiality is prejudice based on appearance rather than the person.

One of the biggest internet sensations was a Scottish woman that appeared on a British talent show. She walked out on stage wearing what might have looked like a lovely Sunday School Easter dress. Her hair was a little grey and not in a fancy style. She didn’t appear to be wearing make-up. She didn't have the dazzling, straight, white teeth you’re used to seeing on TV. And as they’re showing her body, they are also showing shots of the judges and audience. The looks on their faces are revealing. The audience chuckles and snickers. You can sense their disapproval. And then she begins to sing, “I Dreamed a Dream.” And with that, the career of Susan Boyle was launched. Her audition tape became the most watched Youtube video of the year. Pierce Morgan was the first judge to speak and here is what he said, “Without a doubt that was the biggest surprise I have had in three years of this show.”

The Bible emphasizes that God is not partial (1 Samuel 16:7). God is not wired like us. We look at the outward appearance and size somebody up, and judge, but God does not.

Discriminating based on shallow externals, paying particular attention to some while ignoring others, treating someone better or worse for selfish purposes, is incompatible with the Christian faith. Believers are to have no part in showing favoritism.

James reinforces this command with an illustration of natural prejudice that people often make based on appearances.
