First Things First

DAY 9 OF 21

Hearing God

Some people find that hearing God is difficult, whether because of distractions in life or because of a lack of confidence. Thankfully, there is not a formula to hearing Him speak. He uses many ways to communicate with us! We can be sure that God is still speaking to us to because He loves us and wants to have a relationship with us. Here are 4 ways that you can hear God in your life:

  1. Through His word - God speaks to us through His Word (the Bible). In the Bible, there are stories of His love for us, the promises He makes to us, and the life He gave us through Jesus. Through the Bible, we can find help for problems that we are facing and decisions that we need to make. The best way to hear God is to read and study the Bible.

  2. Through His Voice - As believers in Christ, we can hear God’s voice. God loves to speak to His children! Just like you can recognize your mom or dad’s voice or your best friend’s voice because you have spent a lot of time with them, you can learn to recognize God’s voice by spending time in His presence.

  3. Through His Counsel - God speaks to us through Godly counsel from trusted friends, mentors, pastors, and parents. Godly counsel is very important to help us navigate life and to process what God is speaking to us. Godly counsel always agrees with what He’s said in the Bible and is important for growing in our relationship with Him.

  4. Through His Peace - Peace is one way that God speaks to us. When we have prayed and asked Him to give us answers about things in our lives, He gives us peace as an answer to those prayers. One of the scriptures that we read today says to “let God’s peace rule in your heart”; this shows that God’s peace can be a way that He communicates to us.

Hearing God does not have to be a difficult task. God makes Himself available to us and speaks to us in ways that are unique to each of us. As you pray and learn more about God, be confident in knowing that He is speaking to you and that you can hear Him!

Action Step: In which way do you best hear God? List some people who you know that offer Godly counsel in your life. Ask them about how they hear God.
