SAY WHAT? 

Fear and love cannot exist together because they are opposites.

BREAKDOWN: 

I remember in science class learning about opposites and how some substances just cannot mix with each other. We did an experiment with oil and water—you know the one where you put water in a glass and then put oil in the same glass only to see that the oil stays on the top. This is because oil and water do not mix, and because they don’t mix, the oil stays separate from the water. 

Both of these substances were created differently and react in opposite ways of each other. This is the same kind of thought that we have in our text. Fear and love can’t be together. They are opposites. If we have the love of God, we cannot fear because they don’t mix. In the same way, if we have fear, then God’s love isn’t there. It is our role as Christians to show God’s perfect love and “drive out” all fear.

I love this thought because it means that in moments of fear it is our duty and job to drive it out or move it away with God’s love. But how? I am glad you asked. This means when you see fear or sense an instance of fear, the only tool to use is God’s love. 

When someone is being bullied or being made fun of or some other example of what fear produces, it is our role to stand up and show God’s “perfect” love. The scripture says that perfect love drives out fear because with perfect love there is no room or space for fear.

Can you imagine that? Have you ever been in a crowded room or space where you didn’t have room to move around? Think about that space and imagine that it was full of God’s love. Think about the same glass of water in the experiment. If that glass was full to the top and you put in the oil, the oil would spill over because there would be no room in the glass. 

The water is a representation of God’s love and the glass is our heart, but the oil is fear. God wants us to have so much love that we do not give any room for fear.

LIVE IT OUT: 

Be God’s love on purpose today. Don’t allow any room for fear to come in. Push it out at all cost. No matter what the situation or the circumstance, allow God’s love to win over it all.

PRAYER: 

Jesus, today help me to push out fear and only leave room for Your love, even with those who do not have the same love for me. God allow me to love them past it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
