Be.Loved. 25 Simple Acts of Love to Change a Life

DAY 10 OF 26

Day 10: Reconnect with someone with whom you have fallen out of touch

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”  – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

We’ve heard it before, or some variation of it: Life is short. “Blink and your kids are grown.” Job 9:25 reads, “Now my days are swifter than a runner; They flee away, they see no good.” First Peter 1:24-25 says, “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And James 4:13-14 reminds us, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”

How many of us look back on our days, our weeks, and wonder where the time went? The urgency of our days seems to overtake our best-laid plans to intentionally live into each moment and each relationship. Perhaps we even find ourselves more urgently crying out to God for more slowness, more intentionality, less crazy.

Ecclesiastes reminds us of the importance of friendship. When all is said and done, nothing is more important than loving God and loving others. Doing both well takes effort and focus.

And as we stop and look back on our lives, reflecting on our friendships and those God brought in and out of our lives, emotions may overtake us—gratitude, sorrow, acceptance.

But what if we were to use today to reconnect with someone from our past? Someone recently shared a story of how, on a whim, he decided to call up an old friend. That reconnection resulted in this man leading his old friend to Christ. It was completely unexpected. Of course, not all reconnections will lead to this, but God is in the business of using all methods to woo people to Himself.

So today, call or email someone you have lost touch with over the years. Reestablish the relationship and see what God does from there.

Reflect on how you felt doing this, and how you might continue to encourage this person in the days and weeks to come.
