The Gospel of Mark

Gospel author Mark first introduces John the Baptist as the messenger of God prophesied by Isaiah, then shares his account of Jesus’s baptism, temptation in the wilderness, and beginning in ministry.

Mark 1:1-15

Jesus calls His first disciples. They begin traveling together and the news about Jesus spreads, as he casts out impure spirits and demons, heals people of illness and disease, and preaches.

Mark 1:16-45

Jesus forgives the sins of a paralyzed man, upsetting religious leaders, then heals him. Later, Jesus invites Matthew (Levi) to be His disciple, then answers a question about fasting.

Mark 2

Jesus heals on the Sabbath, defying religious leaders. Crowds follow Jesus as He travels, healing and teaching. Jesus appoints His disciples (“the Twelve”), then later defends His position on casting out demons.

Mark 3

In public, Jesus teaches using parables (the sower, a lamp on a stand, the growing seed, and the mustard seed), then explains the parables’ meaning to His disciples in private.

Mark 4:1-34

Jesus is in a boat with His disciples when a sudden storm nearly causes them to sink. Jesus calms the storm by rebuking the wind and the waves, which amazes His disciples.

Mark 4:35-41

Jesus commands an impure spirit to leave a man, permitting it to go instead into a herd of pigs, who then drown themselves. The local townspeople ask Jesus to leave, and He sends the freed man home.

Mark 5:1-20

A religious leader asks Jesus to come and heal his sick daughter. Along the way, a woman is healed when she touches Jesus. When Jesus reaches the girl, she has already died, and He raises her from the dead.

Mark 5:21-43

Jesus sends out “the Twelve” (His disciples) to preach, drive out demons, and heal the sick. King Herod believes that Jesus must be John the Baptist (whom Herod had ordered beheaded), back from the dead.

Mark 6:1-29

After the Twelve return, Jesus miraculously feeds 5,000 families with five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus walks across a lake to join His disciples on a boat. Everywhere He travels, Jesus heals the sick.

Mark 6:30-56

Religious leaders ask why Jesus’s disciples don’t follow tradition, eating with “defiled” hands. Jesus teaches what causes defilement. Jesus resumes traveling, casting out demons and healing wherever He goes.

Mark 7

Jesus miraculously feeds about 4,000 people with seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. Jesus warns His disciples to avoid becoming corrupted, then reminds them of the two miracles of loaves and fish.

Mark 8:1-21

Jesus heals a blind man. Jesus discusses with His disciples who people think He is, prophesies about His death, rebukes Peter for focusing on human concerns, and explains what it costs to follow Him.

Mark 8:22-38

Peter, James, and John see Jesus transfigured, talking with Elijah and Moses. When Jesus’s disciples are unable to drive out a demon, Jesus casts it out, saying that “everything is possible for one who believes.”

Mark 9:1-29

Jesus predicts His death a second time. Jesus says that being great requires serving others. Jesus tells His disciples to let others to share the Gospel, and to avoid corruption that might cause others to stumble.

Mark 9:30-50

Religious leaders test Jesus with a question. Jesus tells His disciples to let children come to Him. After talking with a wealthy man, Jesus explains how difficult it is for rich people to enter the kingdom of God.

Mark 10:1-31

Jesus predicts his death a third time. Jesus explains to His disciples what true authority means. As Jesus and His disciples leave Jericho, Jesus heals a blind man named Bartimaeus.

Mark 10:32-52

As Jesus enters Jerusalem riding on a colt, people worship God, spreading branches and their coats on the road before Him.

Mark 11:1-11

Jesus curses an empty fig tree, then later drives merchants out of the temple courts. The next day, when Peter notes the withered tree, Jesus encourages faith in God. Religious leaders question Jesus’s authority.

Mark 11:12-33

Jesus teaches the parable of the tenants, upsetting religious leaders, who then try (and fail) to entrap Him with a question about taxes. Jesus answers a question about marriage from different religious leaders.

Mark 12:1-27

When Jesus defines the most important commandment, religious leaders stop asking Him questions. Jesus teaches about the Messiah, and against teachers of the law. Jesus marvels at the gift given by a poor widow.

Mark 12:28-44

Jesus talks privately with His disciples, warning them about signs of the end times, while at the same time encouraging them about how they should respond when these things begin to happen.

Mark 13

A woman pours perfume on Jesus, which He says has prepared Him for burial. At “The Last Supper” with His disciples, Jesus predicts His betrayal, shares communion, and predicts that Peter will deny Him.

Mark 14:1-31

As Jesus prays in Gethsemane, His disciples keep falling asleep. When Judas betrays Jesus and He is arrested, His followers flee. Peter follows as Jesus is led to religious leaders, who condemn Jesus to death.

Mark 14:32-65

Three times, people surrounding the high priest’s courtyard accuse Peter of having been with Jesus. Each time, Peter denies it. A rooster crows, reminding Peter of Jesus’s prediction, and he cries.
