Psalma Dhaibhí 1836 (McLeod)

Irish Gaelic

Irish Metrical Psalms - Psalma Dhaibhí 1836

Norman McLeod was born in Campbelltown, Scotland in 1812 and raised in Campsie. He was a native Scots Gaelic speaker. He was a minister for ten years in Lennoxtown where he worked on a Scots Gaelic dictionary. In 1851 he went to Glasgow, and used to visit Ireland to help the Presbyterian Church in Ulster, and became a chaplain to Queen Victoria.

He created a version of the metrical psalms in the Irish language at the request of the Presbyterian Synod of Ulster. He closely followed the Scots Gaelic Version which has been authorised by the Church of Scotland. Dr. Norman McLeod was assisted by Mr. Thaddeus Connellan, of Ireland, and the Rev. H. H. Beamish, of London who revised the manuscript and the proof sheets, in their passing through the press. They were published as Psalma Dhaibhí in London in 1836.

Digital Edition

This edition of the Irish Metrical Psalms was digitised for the Bible Societies in Ireland, with the help of MissionAssist in 2022. It was originally published in Gaelic type, but this edition has been converted to modern orthography to make it easier to read.
