Weaving the Tapestry of History

‘Life Is But A Weaving’

Poem by Corrie ten Boom

My life is but a weaving
Between my God and me.
I cannot choose the colors
He weaveth steadily.

Oft’ times He weaveth sorrow;
And I in foolish pride
Forget He sees the upper
And I the underside.

Not ’til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Will God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned

He knows, He loves, He cares;
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives the very best to those
Who leave the choice to Him.

From the moment we were grafted into the Tapestry of the Ages, we’ve found ourselves primarily viewing it from the backside; the jumbling of thread mixed in with knots, a disarray of frayed edges, and snippets of random colors. Little makes sense, but with a moment to turn the tapestry on its side, we can see the storyline at large.

The Christmas Story covers a monumental surface area of this fabric, a story that has threads dating back to the Garden of Eden and the promise of a Son to come (Genesis 3:15). Threads, though frayed in the weathering of life, hold names like Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba in the highlighted genealogy of our Lord. Even behind the artistry of a manger scene, could it be that some of the most frayed threads were used as if they were strands of gold?

During this Christmas season, we aim to Holy survey the warp and woof of our Master Weaver through the perspectives of Elizabeth, Mary, a Shepherd’s Wife, and Anna the Prophetess. Strands, though seemingly frayed, have been tailored in the most beautiful manner; The Tapestry of Christmas: A Woman’s Story.

Reflection:

Even though we have frayed edges in the eyes of the world, God uses us in His tapestry.

  • Write down one time you were used in your weakness to bring Him glory.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank you for weaving me into your story. I pray that You would give me great boldness and confidence to represent You faithfully, even when I don’t see the bigger picture.
