The moral component of truth

Truth is not just about keeping the right doctrines.  There is a moral component to the truth as well. In the Bible, truth is closely connected to faithfulness and trustworthiness. It is the opposite of deception and wickedness, which God strongly condemns.

The Lord is called “a God of truth” (e.g. in Isaiah 65:16 and Psalm 31:5). He is utterly trustworthy. He will always be true to His word and He will never mislead us. “His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 100:5) A good example is His relationship with the people of Israel. Over and over, they sinned and turned away from the Lord. After numerous warnings, their faithless behavior was punished, but the Lord did not forsake them. He is faithful to his covenant promises.

We should be trustworthy as well. We should speak the truth and our words should be righteous, not twisted or crooked (Proverbs 8:8, Ephesians 4:25). If we promise something, we should keep our word. We should be genuine and reliable in our relationships — just like our Father in heaven.
