Dobu Language

Dobu, also called Dobuan spoken in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands in Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG).

William Edward Brownlow

William Edward Brownlow was born in 1857. He was a pioneer Methodist missionary in Papua and its offshore islands including the D'Entrecasteaux, Trobriand and Louisiade island groups. In 1891 he opened a mission on the island of Dobu with outstations on Panaeati, Tubetube, Goodenough, Murua and Kiriwina. Dobu is spoken in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands in the Milne Bay province of Papua New Guinea. Brownlow served in Papua 1891-1908 and 1920-22. He was a noted linguist. As well as translating the Bible into Dobuan he also compiled many Papuan vocabularies. He died in 1929. His autobiography called Twenty Years among Primitive Papuans was published in 1929.

Dobu Old Testament books

Genesis (Nugana), Exodus (Si Apwesa), Leviticus (Loina), Ruth (Ruta), Esther (Esiteri), Psalms (Salamo), Isaiah (Isaia) and Jonah (iona) were translated into Dobu by William Edward Bromilow (1857-1923) and Eleazar (Eliesa) Duigi, a Dobuan. These were published as Buki Tabu Lowaenei  by the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1919.
