Då sa Petrus: ”Ananias, varför har Satan fyllt ditt hjärta (fått kontroll över dina tankar och dina handlingar) så att du försökte bedra den helige Ande genom att undanhålla en del av pengarna för marken? Innan du sålde den, tillhörde inte den dig då? Och när den var såld, var inte pengarna dina då också? [I grekiskan används en negativ partikel i båda dessa frågor som förväntar sig ett underförstått positivt svar: ”ja, både marken och pengarna tillhörde dig”.] Varför bestämde du dig i ditt hjärta för detta? Du har inte ljugit för människor, utan för Gud.” [Synden var inte att de inte gav hela summan, utan att de låtsades göra det. Allt givande i den första församlingen var frivilligt, se vers 4.]
När Ananias hörde de orden föll han ner och tappade andan. [Här används en medicinsk term för att ”andas ut” och dö, det används bara här, i vers 10 och i Apg 12:23.] Stor fruktan kom över alla som hörde om vad som hänt.
