Iaai language

Iaai or Uvean language is spoken on Ouvéa (Uvea) Island in the Loyalty Islands which lie north of the island of New Caledonia, in the Pacific Ocean.

James Hadfield and the Iaaian (Uvean) Bible

James Hadfield was born in 1864, at Ashton-under-Lyne in England. He joined the London Missionary Society (LMS) and was appointed to Lifu, Loyalty Islands. With his wife Emma they arrived at Lifu on 23rd December 1878. From there he proceeded to Uvea in the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia in 1879.

In 1898, Mr Hadfield brought to England his Iaaian version of the Scriptures. The Bible was published by the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) in 1901.
