DAY 1 OF 31

A future without a family

Imagine a future without a family. What would it be like? You would never attend a family reunion. You would have no spouse to commit your life to. You would have no children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren to enjoy.

You would be alone with no one.

Your future would seem directionless since you have no family roots. You would be alone at the center of your universe. Few things in life could be worse than having no family. What kind of future might you hope for without a family?

Do we really need families in the 21st century, or is this way of organizing societies outdated? Twenty-first-century society has introduced a variety of familial relations that have begun to stretch the notion of family, perhaps to the point of breaking and obsolescence.

The family is the sociological unit that has existed since humankind's beginnings as an organizing structure for human life and the flourishing of societies.

Most of the families we’ll review in the following days needed redemption and healing. All families are messy, dysfunctional to some degree, and full of problems, even those in the Bible.

These families teach us what a family can be. Through the witness of Scripture, we’ll explore how God works his redeeming plan through families – and how he still does today.
