2 Peter 2:16-17
2 Peter 2:15-19 The Message (MSG)
They’ve left the main road and are directionless, having taken the way of Balaam, son of Beor, the prophet who turned profiteer, a connoisseur of evil. But Balaam was stopped in his wayward tracks: A dumb animal spoke in a human voice and prevented the prophet’s craziness. There’s nothing to these people—they’re dried-up fountains, storm-scattered clouds, headed for a black hole in hell. They are loudmouths, full of hot air, but still they’re dangerous. Men and women who have recently escaped from a deviant life are most susceptible to their brand of seduction. They promise these newcomers freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption, for if they’re addicted to corruption—and they are—they’re enslaved.
2 Peter 2:16-17 King James Version (KJV)
but was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet. These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
2 Peter 2:16-17 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
but he received a rebuke for his own transgression, for a mute donkey, speaking with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet. These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved.
2 Peter 2:16-17 New Century Version (NCV)
But a donkey, which cannot talk, told Balaam he was sinning. It spoke with a man’s voice and stopped the prophet’s crazy thinking. Those false teachers are like springs without water and clouds blown by a storm. A place in the blackest darkness has been kept for them.
2 Peter 2:16-17 American Standard Version (ASV)
but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a dumb ass spake with man’s voice and stayed the madness of the prophet. These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved.
2 Peter 2:16-17 New International Version (NIV)
But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—an animal without speech—who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness. These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.
2 Peter 2:16-17 New King James Version (NKJV)
but he was rebuked for his iniquity: a dumb donkey speaking with a man’s voice restrained the madness of the prophet. These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
2 Peter 2:16-17 Amplified Bible (AMP)
but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a mute donkey spoke with a man’s voice and restrained the prophet’s madness. [Num 22:21-31] These [false teachers] are springs without water and mists driven by a tempest, for whom is reserved the gloom of black darkness.
2 Peter 2:16-17 New Living Translation (NLT)
But Balaam was stopped from his mad course when his donkey rebuked him with a human voice. These people are as useless as dried-up springs or as mist blown away by the wind. They are doomed to blackest darkness.
2 Peter 2:16-17 The Passion Translation (TPT)
who was rebuked for evil by a donkey incapable of speech yet that spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness. These people are dried-up riverbeds, waterless clouds pushed along by stormy winds—the deepest darkness of gloom has been prepared for them.
2 Peter 2:16-17 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness. These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.
