Ever tried to fully wrap your head around God? Yeah, good luck with that. Psalm 145:3 says His greatness is unsearchable—meaning, no matter how much we learn, we’ll never hit the bottom. And yet, somehow, we can still know Him. Paul tells the Colossians we can grow in our knowledge of God, which is kind of mind-blowing. The more we seek Him, the more He reveals—and that paradox should leave us in awe.
Jesus put it simply: “God is spirit” (John 4:24). That doesn’t mean He’s some floating ghost. It means He’s beyond our physical categories—unseen yet fully real. And while we can’t box Him in, He’s made Himself known, most clearly through Jesus.
When we talk about God’s attributes, some are ones we can reflect in small ways (communicable), and others are completely beyond us (incommunicable). Here are a few that stretch the mind:
- Independence – God is completely self-sufficient. He doesn’t need us, but He chooses relationship with us anyway (Acts 17:24-25).
- Immutability – He never changes—His character, plans, and promises are rock solid (Malachi 3:6).
- Eternity – No beginning, no end. He exists outside of time, seeing it all at once (Revelation 1:8).
- Omnipresence – He’s everywhere, working in different ways in different places (Psalm 139:7-10).
But this isn’t just theological trivia—it changes how we live:
- If God doesn’t need us, that means our worth isn’t in what we do but in the fact that He made us for His glory.
- Since He never changes, His promises are always trustworthy.
- Because He exists outside of time, nothing surprises Him—not in our lives, not in history.
- And since He’s everywhere, we are never alone.
Trying to comprehend God is like trying to fit the ocean into a teacup. He existed before time, He’s present in every moment, and yet He invites us into relationship (James 4:8).
The theologian Herman Bavinck put it this way: "Every creature is continually becoming…and finds this rest in God and in him alone, for only he is pure being, and not becoming."
In a world that constantly shifts, God is our anchor. As we study His Word and seek His presence, we don’t just gain knowledge—we encounter Him. Psalm 16:11 says that in His presence is fullness of joy.
So, let’s lean into the mystery. Let’s embrace what we can know and let that lead us to deeper worship, trust, and love.
