Characteristics that Lead to a Good Name

“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.” Billionaire investor, Warren Buffett, made that statement when talking about his success. The importance of a good reputation is not a new idea. The writer of Proverbs 22 reminds us in Verse 1 that “A good name is to be chosen over great wealth...” Within the rest of the chapter, we can see four character traits that lead to a “good name.” 

The first is humility. Verse 4: “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life.” We must resist the temptation to become overly proud because of our success. Humility and the fear of the Lord are what truly make us prosperous. The second character trait we see is generosity. Verse 9 says, “A generous person will be blessed…” When we seek to bless those in need, we experience God’s blessing, but when we neglect or look down on them, we experience God’s punishment, according to Verses 22 and 23. 

The third character trait is financial responsibility. Verses 26 and 27 remind us it is foolish to spend what we do not have. Our culture is full of examples of individuals who have experienced ruin because of poor financial decisions. Bankruptcy is a surefire way to damage your reputation. The fourth and final character trait that will lead to a good reputation is discernment in our relationships. Verses 24 and 25 remind us that the character of our friends will influence us. Be careful who you allow speaking into your life. As followers of Jesus, let’s seek to honor God by living honorably before men.

Dear God, thank you for the reminder of the importance of having a “good name.” Help me to grow in humility, generosity, financial responsibility, and relational discernment.
